About

Dr Ruth Plackett is a Senior Research Fellow in Digital Health in the Department of AI and Personalised Health at King’s College London and a Visiting Senior Research Fellow at University College London. Her research focuses on developing and evaluating digital health interventions and understanding how technologies shape health and healthcare. She is particularly interested in how social media and digital technologies can support mental health and wellbeing, how online experiences may create challenges, and how healthcare professionals can respond. Ruth has held several NIHR fellowships to investigate social media use and young people’s mental health. At King’s, she explores how digital technologies can improve population health, including how people interact with health apps and services such as the NHS App and MyChart, and how these technologies can be effectively integrated into healthcare.

Young People Want to Talk About Social Media. Are We Listening?
As a Senior Research Fellow in Digital Health at King's College London, I've spent the past few years speaking with young adults about social media and mental health. As the UK moves towards restrictions on social media use for under-16s, alongside other countries taking a similar approach, public discussion often comes down to a simple question: is social media good or bad for young people's mental health? To explore this topic, my colleagues and I interviewed 28 young adults aged 18 to 25.
