About

Dr Daniel Marcu is a sperm biologist and the Co-Founder and CEO of Virilitas Labs, a UK MedTech company spun out of the University of East Anglia that is building a decentralised platform for male fertility testing. He is an Honorary Lecturer at UCL's EGA Institute for Women's Health and a Visiting Research Associate at UEA. He holds a BBSRC-funded PhD in Sperm Biology and Genomics from UEA and an MSc in Prenatal Genetics and Fetal Medicine from UCL. Daniel is a former President of the Network of Young Researchers in Andrology, and in that role, he served as an ex officio member of the Executive Committee of the European Academy of Andrology. He currently sits on the IRHEC Steering Committee at the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology. His work focuses on making male fertility assessment easier to access and on bringing men into the conversation about reproductive health earlier.

Why Has Male Fertility Been Ignored for Over 2,000 Years?
I study sperm for a living, so I am used to the giggles and raised eyebrows. But here is the fact that surprises almost everyone: we understood the female reproductive system in reasonable scientific detail well before we understood the male one — and in some ways, we are still catching up. This is not an abstract interest for me. As a young and inquisitive scientist, I quickly realised how little knowledge existed around male reproductive health, which pushed me to pursue a PhD in sperm biology
